Social Capital Takes Centre Stage at Symposium

The importance of positive relationships and community engagement in terms of rehabilitation will be the topic of the first symposium of the Interdependent Network (IN).

Health and rehab professionals and support workers will gather in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in October to exchange ideas in order to change lives for the better.

Patti Flaherty, Executive Director of CONNECT, has been involved with the IN since its 2008 inception. CONNECT was invited by IN organizer Dr. Al Condeluci, CEO of Community Living and Support Services (CLASS).

Students Gain Valuable Insight into Residents' Perspective

Former CONNECT resident, Jennifer, shares some incredible insight with future caregivers about being on the resident side of care.

Jennifer spoke on August 6 about her experience as a CONNECT resident to four students from Kwantlen College, who spent two weeks doing a practicum at CONNECT in Langley.

Kwantlen is one of three schools that sends students to CONNECT to complete practicums.

The hour-long talk was emotional – both for Jennifer and the students.

The Road Back

Back in mid-June, as Calgary was disappearing under water, I was driving the Connector to Langley. About 60kms east of Merritt I drove into heavy rain which suddenly turned into heavy hail. In an instant the road was covered in ice marbles and I lost control of my steering. I wasn't speeding or in cruise control but I was going fast enough to face plant my car in a ditch with some force. As a result I crushed my L1 vertebra. I was on my own but was soon joined by two roadside 'angels' who called for assistance and kept me company through the worst weather ever until help arrived about an hour later.
