The Power of an Idea: Celebrating 20 Years of CONNECT Langley Annual BBQ
Some of CONNECT's most meaningful traditions began with a simple idea.
On August 14, the people we support, families, employees, and friends gathered for CONNECT Langley's 20th annual BBQ, a celebration of community, connection, and a tradition that has brought people together for two decades.
Juliet Henderson Rahbar, Leader of Culture, People and Services at CONNECT Langley, shared that "the theme of this year's celebration was The Power of an Idea."
Twenty years ago, Maggy Coulter, Life Redesign Coach at CONNECT Langley, shared an idea with Janette Jackman, Leader of Organizational Strength at CONNECT Langley: to create a picnic and BBQ where people could come together, build relationships, and enjoy time as a community. Janette supported the idea, and what began as a simple conversation grew into one of CONNECT Langley's most cherished annual traditions.
That spirit of innovation and collaboration continues to define CONNECT's culture today. As Juliet reflected, the annual BBQ is a reminder that when people feel empowered to share ideas and others step forward to support them, those ideas can create a lasting impact.
The power of an idea can also be seen in another long-standing BBQ tradition. Several years ago, Alex, a person we were supporting, approached Sarah Starodub, Independence Coach at CONNECT Langley, with a plan to raise money for Heart and Stroke through a community raffle. Continuing that fundraising tradition, this year's raffle baskets raised more than $500 for the BC Mobility Opportunities Society, an organization that helps make outdoor recreation accessible through activities such as adapted paddleboarding, trail riding, and kayaking. Their support has created meaningful opportunities for many people at CONNECT to experience adventure, build confidence, and connect with their community.
This year's BBQ celebrated more than a 20-year tradition. It celebrated the people behind it, the ideas that shaped it, and the culture that continues to sustain it. From Maggy's vision for a community gathering to Alex's commitment to giving back through fundraising, the day was a powerful reminder that at CONNECT, one idea can spark a tradition, strengthen a community, and leave a lasting impact for years to come.
